Self-Paced Learning with AR

Creating one of the few programs in themed entertainment and attraction design internationally

Early uses of AR technology was used to support step-by-step instructions with the help of Google Glass in the manufacturing industry. The use of AR technologies affords the opportunity to provide self-paced learning. Consider that many individuals utilize websites such as Youtube for self-paced instruction. Imagine an individual desiring to use a machine. Rather than relying on Youtube for instruction the individual can wear a pair of glasses where the application can take advantage of image recognition and provide on-the-spot instruction based on where the machine is at and the items on the machine. A practical application for this would be within a makerspace environment. A makerspace is a facility with multiple machines designed to support creators and innovators as they develop multiple items. Machines included in these spaces can be anything from 3D printers, saws, woodshop machinery, metals machinery, computers and a wet lab. Individuals who join a makerspace are provided training by a lab technician. During the summer of 2021 a MURI undergraduate team developed a first version prototype of a working AR experience that provided educational overlays for a 3D printer. This overlay allows for text-based step-by-step instruction with simple animations that serve as functional on an iPhone or Android device. They also began the process of developing a proprietary AR headset for use with makerspace machinery.

The second iteration of this research project will focus on further development of the proprietary AR headset, expansion of educational modules for use with multiple machines and consideration of an administrative system to support educational prompt implementation and organization.
